Masters in Management in Technology Commercialization and Enterpreneurship (5 year program)

In lieu of the general core engineering program presented earlier, students who identify biomedical engineering as their discipline and in addition would like to pursue the Masters degree in Management in Technology Commercialization and Enterpreneurship offered by the Lally School of Mangement may follow the program outlined below

I. Baccalaureate Program

Students will complete the Major in BME/Minor in Management outlined in the Renseelaer catalog. This curriculum requires a minimum of 132 credits.

Upon completion of this baccalaureate program students will receive a BS in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Management and would have fullfiled the undergraduate courses requirements for admission into the Masters in Management in Technology Commercialization and Enterpreneurship.

Applications for admission into the Master program should be submitted to the Lally School of Management not earlier than the Spring semester of the Second Year.

 

II. Masters Program (awarded by the Lally School of Management)

The Master’s in Management in Technology Commercialization and Entrepreneurship is a 30 credit degree targeted to be completed in 12 months or less.
This is a new program offered by the Lally School of Management, designed for graduating Rensselaer seniors currently enrolled in Management, Architecture, or selected  H&SS, Science or Engineering programs.

The goals are for BME students to:

1) Learn technology commercialization in depth, from both technology push and market pull perspectives-as well as legal issues in technology commercialization.
2) Increase depth in a sub-field of engineering or science

The 30 credit courses are structured as follows:

  • Creating and Managing an Enterprise (3 cr)
  • Business Law (3 cr)
  • IP Law (3 cr)
  • Corporate Finance (3 cr)
  • Mangement Accounting (3cr)
  • Four Technology/Science courses (12 credits at 4000-6000 level) chosen from a list provided.
  • Creating and Managing the Enterprise II  - Culminating Experience (3 CR)
  • Severino Center Series on Enterpreneurship (Speakers, visits to start-ups) (no credit)

The TC&E Master’s is for students who have studied management, but have a passion for technology, as well as for technology students who want to build a career in tech management.

Three career options identified for graduates of the TC&E program are:

  1. Start a new business, or join New Product Design Operations in a large corporation
  2. Enroll in Albany Law School and obtain a second masters degree- a Master’s in Legal Studies in Technology Transfer.
  3. Spend a year in a large corporation as a new product design specialist thinking like an entrepreneur, then return to the Lally School for your MBA (one year).
